Character Technical Director
The Character Technical Directors design, implement and create animation controls and deformation systems to control 3D geometry which may represent characters, creatures, vehicles, and props for a Digital Feature production. They may also be responsible for implementing the dynamic simulation of hair and cloth on digital characters, including hard and soft body dynamics, and other similar effects. Note that we are seeking both character-building and character FX TDs.
Responsibilities:
• Working with animators to ensure building of most effective animation controls
• Overseeing and troubleshooting rigging assets through the animation pipeline
• Developing tools, procedures and interfaces to optimize animation pipeline
• Creating and maintaining studio wide solutions for character and animation pipeline
• Developing character rigs for shot production for projects
• Creating character "effects" such as hair/fur, cloth, muscle, skin/flesh etc.
• Assisting in developing, optimizing, and maintaining the dynamic hair and cloth production workflow
• Participating as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions
• Mentoring junior level team members
Qualifications:
• 3 to 5 years experience in film or animation production
• Strong understanding of anatomy and motion
• Good understanding of existing CG deformation and rigging techniques
• Background in art and animation helpful
• Experience with one or more commercial graphics packages, such as Maya and XSI
• Experience with one or more dynamic hair and/or cloth packages, such as Maya hair or classic cloth, Shave and a Haircut, Syflex hair or cloth, nCloth and the nucleus solver a plus
• Experience with scripting and programming (C or C++, API, Python, and MEL) and Unix-based operating system experience desired
• Strong communication skills are required, as well the ability to implement creative direction using the most efficient method
• Must work well in a team, with strong communication skills and attention to detail
