The Mathematics, Statistics & Computer Science Department has 25 full-time members, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in mathematics, computer science, statistics, and related areas. The department received the 2008 University of Wisconsin System Regents Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Departments and Programs. The department is committed to student centered and technology enhanced instruction. Technology usage includes students working on laptops in the classroom, web enhancements (e.g., course management and on-line homework systems), and interactive distance education courses. Faculty members involve undergraduate students in research and the department holds an NSF grant to host an REU site in Mathematics through at least the summer of 2014.
The department offers all the core courses necessary for the University's program in Applied Mathematics & Computer Science (150+ students) and the computer science concentration of the Game Design & Development program (120+ students). It also provides service courses (in all three disciplines) for the various programs within the University. The department is currently launching a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

THE GAME DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: The Game Design & Development Program is a rapidly growing major, with 200+ students including concentrations in either Art or Computer Science. Students take a mixture of game design and concentration-specific courses. Four specific game design courses are collaborative experiences, with faculty and students representing both Art and CS areas participating in the course.

A member of the University of Wisconsin System, UW-Stout serves approximately 9,300 students in 20 graduate and 40 undergraduate programs. Increasingly, courses are offered via alternative delivery methods and time frames. Faculty members are responsible for teaching, advising, research and scholarly activity, and service.
