Job Descriptiontop

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for a permanent-track position as Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Game Design to begin in the fall of 2013.

The ideal candidate for this position will have expertise both in general computer science and in game design, along with dedication to innovation in undergraduate education and an exciting vision for the future of computer games. Experience in the computer game industry is also a plus. We are particularly interested in candidates with the demonstrated ability to work synergistically across disciplinary boundaries, connecting work in game design to work in one or more other disciplines. Disciplines of interest include, but are not limited to, other areas of focus in our School of Cognitive Science such as artificial intelligence, computer graphics, computer animation, cognitive psychology, educational sciences, philosophy of mind, media studies and child development. We construe the term “games” broadly and would welcome applications from candidates with interests in educational games, games for health or social change, board games, and work that redefines the definition of “games.” The ideal candidate will have or will be expecting a terminal degree in a field related to the position; this field need not be computer science, but the successful candidate must have sufficient computer science experience to be able to support student work on the development of computer games.

Responsibilities include instruction of four courses per year, work with students on independent projects, and advising. We are searching for experienced and diverse applicants who are able to combine engaged teaching with creative inquiry within the context of an experimental, rigorous liberal arts education. The ability to work cooperatively with faculty, students and staff of various backgrounds is important.

Review of candidates begins on December 1, 2012, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit a statement of teaching and research interests, curriculum vita, sample of written work, and three letters of recommendation via our website at http://jobs.hampshire.edu/
