Technical Artist

Job Description

InContext Solutions is looking to hire a motivated and entrepreneurially-minded Technical Artist to support our in-house team of 3D artists; help integrate art assets, build new tools on top of our current pipeline and extend the Unity editor to automate tedious work while ensuring the quality of our content is of the highest standard.  We are hiring the type of person that knows and loves the creative process but understands the limitations and difficulties involved in creating beautiful, performant 3D content.  Our team is driven to reduce artist iteration time through thoughtfully designed tools that don’t require a 12-page manual to understand.  We prioritize and knock out a large amount of technical tasks, all while having an eye for visual aesthetics.

 

Responsibilities

  • Design and assist in developing tools for artists and engineers
  • Create and maintain documentation for tools, conventions, & procedures
  • Facilitate on-going training with artists during hand-off of new tools and pipeline improvements
  • Proactively seek out inefficiencies and problems in existing workflows and identify potential solutions
  • Improve and enhance tools/processes throughout the project cycle
  • Assist in checking art content against technical guidelines prior to integration in the game engine
  • Review current and emerging technologies to advise and integrate into game engine
  • Establish performance profiling guidelines

  • Held a hands-on session with artists to brainstorm a solution to a current workflow and pipeline problem
  • Wrote a Unity editor script that extended a third-party screen capture plug-in by adding sleek UI that enables artists to configure input and configure output parameters

The Technical Artist will report directly to leadership on the Visualization team.  This person will work closely with all 3D artists and adjacent to all engineering and content creation functions within the company to help us achieve our goals. Expect to change the world.

 

When will I start?  What will I make?

Ideal candidates will be local (based in Chicago) and have availability to start a new full time position in the next 3-5 weeks. The interview process should take no more than 2-4 weeks from initial phone interview to offer letter. Otherwise check these at the front door:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Game Programming preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of at least one major 3D software package (Max, Maya)
  • Has written content plugins for a 3D Software package (Maya, Max, C4D)
  • Experience in all facets of game art creation (modeling, lighting, texturing/shading, character rigging and animation.)
  • Thorough understanding of characteristics that make performant real-time assets (mesh optimization techniques, texture compression, etc.)
  • Comfortable with common scripting languages (MEL script, Python, etc.)
  • Strong C# programming skills with C++ experience
  • Demonstrated initiative and relentless motivation to tackle tough problems
  • Ability to step through and learn an existing codebase while abiding to existing code style
  • Bilingual communicator; fluent in artist and technical rhetoric
  • Strong object oriented software design principals
  • Entrepreneurial, ambitious and comfortable voicing new ideas in group settings
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Is intelligent and passionate about what they do, lifelong learner
  • Is friendly and likeable.  We wouldn’t hire someone we wouldn’t like to sit next to on a plane for 12 hours

  • Relational database experience (MSSQL, MYSSQL)
