Mobile Graphics Engineer

Do you like making things with triangles? Were you excited by the OpenGL ES 3.1 spec release? Want to help make the world a better place by increasing access to public data?

Mapzen is a mobile-focused mapping company built entirely on open software and data. We’re looking for a graphics engineer to help us re-imagine how maps, cities, and spaces are visualized. We’re creating an open source platform that empowers developers to use geographic data creatively -- for transit apps, games, data journalism, architecture, anything!

This will be a foundational technology role on a small, newly formed team. You’ll be architecting a cross-platform rendering engine, primarily for mobile but also considering the next generation of high-performance web technologies. A helpful background for this role includes:

  • Deep knowledge of C/C++, 3D math, OpenGL (and its variants), and GLSL

  • Procedural generation and building geometry on the fly with real-time streaming data

  • Optimizing for mobile architectures on Android with NDK, and/or iOS

  • Obsessed with profiling & optimizing the draw pipeline to squeeze the most out of constrained resources

  • Experience with game engines like Unreal or CryEngine, or creative coding tools like openFrameworks & Cinder

  • Building & documenting SDKs/APIs for other developers

  • Interest in OpenCL or other techniques for GPGPU

  • Interest in emerging high-performance web tools like Emscripten & SIMD.js

  • Past experience contributing to open source projects -- or motivated to start participating

  • Love doing creative things with graphics

Our founders previously engineered and designed products at Google, Kickstarter, and MIT, and built award-winning mobile apps with open civic data. Their work has been covered by the New York Times and presented at the Game Developers Conference.

We have offices in New York and the Bay Area, with great pay, vacation, and benefits. Full-time/on-site is preferred (we can provide relocation), but contract or remote work is also possible in the right situations. We’re looking for people with diverse backgrounds of all types!
