Penny Publications, LLC, is North America’s leading publisher of crossword and other print puzzle magazines. The parent company of Penny Press and Dell Magazines, Penny Publications also owns Three Across, LLC, home of our new digital game team, PuzzleNation.

 PuzzleNation is excited to bring our traditional print puzzles to mobile and social platforms while also creating new experiences for gamers. We know and love Crosswords, Word Search, and Sudoku puzzles, as well as the entire variety puzzles category, and believe there is a great opportunity to deliver all-new digital experiences to puzzle lovers.

 Our team currently includes engineering, art, and product management folks. Now, we need a great game designer. The right candidate will mesh perfectly with the current team and have significant responsibility for:

  • PuzzleNation game design including core mechanics, print-to-digital gameplay translation, UI flow, game balance, game documentation and monetization plans
  • Contributions to project goals, analytics planning and analysis
  • Competitive research and analysis, ongoing industry-wide knowledge of trends and key players in mobile & social games
  • Contributions to ongoing product roadmap, including data-driven shifts in strategy

 The right candidate will have the following experience and skills:

  • Two or more years in a game designer role
  • Game design credit on three shipped games, two or more platforms
  • Creation of game design documentation, monetization plans and post-launch iteration plans for a minimum of three games
  • Have a deep understanding of game design philosophy and the unique challenges of designing mobile & social games
  • Understanding of how to effectively blend game design with monetization
  • Ability to receive and deliver thoughtful critique
  • Understanding of the unique challenges in creating and solving puzzle based games
  • Experience working with remote collaborators
  • Facility with various design and project communication tools
  • Comfortable working as part of a small team, wearing multiple hats, with fixed deadlines
