Database Engineer

DATABASE ENGINEER

TapZen blends art and science to make awesome games. A key component of this approach is collecting and sifting through vast datasets. We’re looking for a mid-level database engineer with strong SQL experience who can help us build out our analytics technical infrastructure. Although our systems don’t run on SQL, the technical systems that we use rely on tools and technologies with many commonalities to relational databases. You will come in on the ground floor, helping us develop the reporting infrastructure that our Product Managers use to inform the development of our games. In addition to writing sophisticated reports and queries, you will optimize data collection for performance, and work closely with the technical staff to create dashboards and evolve the analytics backend systems over time.

This position is initially for a three month-long contract, 40-hours/week based out of our Los Angeles studio. There is the opportunity to evolve this position into a full-time role.

Required Skills and Experience

  • BS Degree and 2+ years of database design and implementation in a Saas or high throughput client/server environment. Equivalent combination of education and experience possible.
  • Strong understanding of and experience with relational schema design.
  • Working familiarity with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Couchbase, Memcache, Redis).
  • A strong desire to learn and an analytical approach to problem solving
  • Superb data analysis skills
  • Working technical understanding of scalable multi-tier mobile and/or web applications
  • Not required but very helpful:
    • Splunk SDK and query writing a very strong plus
    • Familiarity with Node.js and json formatted data
    • Hand-on experience with ETL (extract, transform, and load) technologies and workflows
    • Experience working with game development teams
